To Be Or Not To Be… As We Come Up to Christmas

As we all know, Christmas the time of seasonally adjusted cultural madness.  But as we become more and more familiar with the dissatisfactions of consumer culture, and as the Establishment work tirelessly to convince us that (a) they must introduce us to austerity, and (b) we must keep shopping to ensure economic growth despite this, how can we really get to the bottom of all this nonsense? Erich Fromm has some ideas, and it involves going beyond the superficial look at consumerism to get to the heart of the economic rationality that underpins it  – to the issue of over-commodification and how it encourages a ‘having mode of existence’ that messes up our natural abilities for ‘being’ – for ourselves and for each other -  To Be Or Not To Be
